We live in a time where you can type your pain into a screen and get a reply in seconds. Gentle. Polite. Even empathic, in its way. AI tools can be useful. They offer immediate availability, a sense of anonymity, and occasionally thoughtful reflections. They can provide structure when we feel scattered, and words when we’re at a loss — creating the illusion of being accompanied.


But therapy — real therapy — is something else entirely.


It isn’t just about receiving advice, or reframing thoughts, or being offered strategies or affirmations written by code. It’s about relationship — a live, unfolding encounter between two people.


A human therapist doesn’t just respond to your words. They feel your silences. They notice what isn’t said. They bring their own humanity into the room — with all the depth, intuition, and responsiveness that entails.


AI can simulate conversation. It can even emulate care. But it can’t sit with you in the weight of what you are carrying. It can’t tolerate the unknown. It can’t be moved by you. It won’t hold the weight of your pain with the gravity of its own history.


You might come to therapy feeling broken, or too much — too chaotic, too dark, too painful. But to have another person stay with you — without turning away, without reaching for a solution — that does something. It makes things more possible to bear. It opens a space for something new.


In therapy, the relationship is the work. The aliveness of two people meeting — imperfect, unpredictable, vulnerable — is what makes healing possible.
